Outside Assembly are industrial designers with over 20 years experience shaping urban environments, public infrastructure and civic spaces across Australia.

We partnered with the studio to reposition the brand, clarify its strategic value and elevate its brand presence with a cohesive identity system. To position the brand in a way that engages all stakeholders across the project lifecycle, from design through to construction.

The Challenge

Outside Assembly needed a brand that accurately represented the full scope of their offering. Not just as a design studio, but as a partner capable of taking projects from concept through to delivery.

The Details

The brand was built around a central idea — Come Together.
The strategic foundation of the entire brand, it reflects how OA work: bringing together multiple disciplines, stakeholders, materials and environments to create outcomes that connect people in physical space.

This positioning allowed the brand to move beyond the design-only studio aesthetic into broader reaching territory. One that balances industrial capability with design aesthetic and human connection.

Ideation

The strategy is expressed through a bold and flexible identity system designed to signal capability, collaboration and clarity at every touchpoint.

The wordmark and icon feature customised cut-outs inspired by manufacturing processes, introducing an industrial edge while maintaining a refined, considered aesthetic. Paired with the ‘OA’ monogram, the system allows the brand to flex between formal and shorthand expressions.

Graphic elements draw from both materiality and human interaction, referencing not only the making process, but the people who engage with the outcomes. From welders in the factory to individuals inhabiting the spaces, these cues reinforce Outside Assembly’s role beyond design as contributors to lived environments.

The messaging system extends this thinking, using clear, direct language that speaks across multiple audiences while reinforcing a uniquely Australian, ego-free approach. Together, these elements position Outside Assembly as a highly capable end-to-end partner with a distinct point of view, grounded in both craft and collaboration.
